Lesson 4 - The Work of Jesus Christ

John 4:34 "My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.

1. He came to die.

A. It is foretold in the Old Testament

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."

Isaiah 53:4-6 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

B. It is prominent in the New Testament

The death of Jesus is mentioned in the New Testament more than 175 times.

Matthew 16:21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

2. He rose from the dead.

A. It was an actual resurrection.

John 19:33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.

Mark 15:44, 45 Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.

B. It was a bodily resurrection.

Luke 24:39, 40 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.

C. The implications of the resurrection.

1. It fully confirms the truth and value of what Christ taught and did:

I Corinthians 15:17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.

2. It is the guarantee of our own resurrection:

John 14:19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.

3. We have the assurance of Christ's power in our lives today:

Romans 1:3, 4 regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

3. He ascended into heaven.

A. He is not merely in heaven, but is spiritually present everywhere.

MAT 18:20 For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."

B. He has entered His priestly ministry in Heaven.

HEB 6:20 where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.

C. He can now send us the Holy Spirit.

John 16:7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

D. He has gone to prepare a place for us.

John 14:2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.

Memory Verse

John 14:2 "In my Father's house are many rooms: if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you."

Last week's Memory Verse

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
